Hearing aids spend most of the time in an environment, which is hostile for electronics. The temperature and humidity levels within our own ear canals can be problematic. Though you may take regular measures for the hearing aid care and keep up with regular maintenance, time takes its toll on all technology, and it’s possible that your hearing aid will eventually wear out through the course of normal use.

Receiver-In-The-Canal (RIC ) Cleaning Routine
DAILY TASKS
Wipe down the surface of your dome and thin transparent wire thoroughly with the cloth provided, to remove any dirt or dry wax.
Clean all dirt collected in the sound outlet at the end of your dome by using the brush provided.
If there appears to be any moisture on your hearing aid, please put it into the Dry Kit overnight.
MONTHLY TASKS
Check the whole surface of your hearing aid and give it a thorough clean with moist cloth. Pay attention to the microphones on the hearing aid usually above your program button. Give these openings a gentle clean using a brush to remove any build-up of dirt or dust.
Check the condition of the wax filter. If your filter is looking discoloured or dirty, or if there is wax in it that you cannot brush out, it is time to change the filter.
Your pack of new filters will include a tool to change the filter. Use one end to remove the old filter from the sound outlet and use the other end to carefully push another clean filter into its place.
Brush away any wax from around the dome.
SIX-MONTHS TASKS
If you haven’t already changed the wax filter on your hearing aid, you should do so now. These filters need to be changed at least once in every six months.
Your pack of new filters will include a tool to change the filter. Use one end to remove the old filter from the sound outlet and use the other end to carefully push another clean filter into its place.
Carefully check your domes, checking for tears, hardening or severe discolouring. If you see any of these in your domes please contact your local HearFon hearing centre to arrange a service check, during which your Hearing Aid Audiologist will change your domes.
If your hearing aid has microphone protectors these will need to be changed at least once in every six months as instructed by your Specialist.
Behind-The-Ear Hearing Aid (BTE) Cleaning Routine
DAILY TASKS
Wipe down the surface of your dome and thin tube thoroughly with cleaning wipes or with the cloth provided, to remove any dirt or dry wax.
If there appears to be any moisture on your hearing aid, please put it into a Dehumidifier Kit overnight.
Check the tubing for wax. If there are any blockages, detach the tubing from the hearing aid where they meet. Then pass the cleaning thread through the tubing and pull out at the other end. Once clean, reattach the tubing to the hearing aid.
MONTHLY TASKS
Wipe down the surface of your mould with soft cloth provided to remove any dirt or dry wax.
Clean all dirt collected in the sound outlet by using the brush provided. The other end of the brush can also be used to pick free any wax that has become stuck in the sound outlet.
If your hearing aid has a small vent hole under the sound outlet, clean this with the brush provided.
If there appears to be any moisture on your hearing aid, please put it into a dry kit.
Check your tubing for moisture droplets. If any are found, remove the tubing from the hearing aid where the two meet. Then use a air pump to clear the moisture before reattaching the tubing to the hearing aid.
SIX-MONTHS TASKS
Carefully check your domes, checking for deterioration such as tears, hardening or severe discolouring. If you see deterioration, please contact your nearest HearFon hearing centre to arrange a 7 star service check.
Similarly check your thin tubes. Make sure there are no splits or kinks in the tubing. Also check for any hardening or severe discolouring. If there are any problems with your tubing contact your nearest HearFon hearing centre to arrange a 7 star service check.
If your hearing aid has microphone protectors these will need to be changed at least once every six months as instructed by your Hearing Aid Audiologist.
Custom Hearing Aid Cleaning Routine
DAILY TASKS
Wipe down the surface of your hearing aid with cleaning wipes, or with the cleaning spray and cloth provided to remove any dirt or dry wax.
Clean all dirt collected in the sound outlet by using the brush provided.
If your hearing aid has a small vent hole under the sound outlet, clean this with airspray or the brush provided.
If there appears to be any moisture on your hearing aid, please put it into an dry kit.

How Much Do Hearing Aid Repairs Cost?
The cost to fix a broken or damaged hearing aid would differ based on a few things like whether the hearing aid is still under warranty, how damaged the device is, and the cost of replacement parts for your unit.
If you bought your hearing system from HearFon and it is still under warranty, your repair costs will likely be minimal unless there is a breakage/battery leakage or exposure to water. Hearing aids that are no longer under warranty may cost a little more to fix. Cracked or broken shells on custom-molded devices can be expensive, but in some cases, these cracks can be repaired.
Are hearing aids easily broken?
The hearing aids available nowadays are small and light and therefore the internal components are delicate and any excessive force applied to the device may crack the outer shell, which is likely to compromise its function permanently. Internal components might be moisture resistant, but submersion can still permanently damage the unit.
How do I know if my hearing aids are broken?

How or what would cause damage to a Hearing aid?
Swimming or showering without first removing your devices can cause damage, as most hearing aids are not rated to withstand water. Dropping them on hard surfaces would also damage them.
Can all types of Damaged hearing aids be repaired?
It takes a hearing aid expert to properly diagnose a damaged hearing aid, but you can assume your hearing aids are beyond repair if:
- Your devices are more than four to Five years old.Hearing aids typically last for Four to five years. If your hearing aids are beyond four years old, repair needs are likely to pile up, in which case it makes more financial sense to get some new hearing aids.
- The damage is visible.Although the damage may not be as bad as it looks, if your hearing aid has been stepped on or smashed in some other way, it may be unfixable.
- Your hearing aids have an extensive repair history.If your hearing aid has undergone multiple repairs for the same or different issues, it may be beyond saving. Much like a totaled car, a hearing aid needing that many fixes to be functional may simply no longer be worth the repair cost, and it may make more sense financially to invest in some new units.
A manufacturer’s warranty essentially states that the product should work for as long as the warranty lasts — nothing beyond that is guaranteed. Balancing the cost of repairs with the cost of a new system (and how it will benefit your life) can be tricky, but our practice can help you determine a proper course of action after diagnosing the damage and estimating repair costs.
